Cantabile, one of the tracks I will be recording this winter with NeoQuartet for my upcoming album, is a slow movement from the Three Monologues for String Quartet. I composed the “Monologues” imagining theatrical auditions during which actors are required to recite short monologues showcasing their abilities to portray contrasting emotions at the drop of a hat. While the outer movements are dissonant and aggressive, Cantabile is tender and hesitant. What do you think the imaginary actor is speaking about?
This particular recording comes from a reading session by the S.E.M. Ensemble’s string quartet: Pauline Kim Harris, violin, Lynn Bechtold, violin, David Gold, viola, Brian Snow, cello, in Brooklyn, NY on February 15, 2012.
