Reflections on Art and Life
The new orchestral piece is basically finished but some final polishes are still needed. Today I worked on the brass section, and in particular, its articulations and phrasing. I realized that in a couple of places I ignored the trumpets’ need to breathe, so I punched a few holes in the entire brass section and the music opened up and became lighter.
For the first time in my composition, I have called for a bass trombone and discovered a new appreciation for the power of this instrument and the entire brass section. I love its different timbres and the wide scale of expression from mellow and delicate, to bombastic and outrageous. I would love to write something for a brass ensemble in the future.
