Why You Are Afraid to Commission a Composer

Dosia McKayYou are a soloist, a music director of an ensemble, or an artist in another field looking for original music to complement your project but you are apprehensive because

  • You haven’t commissioned a composer before and are not sure how to approach the conversation

  • You have commissioned a composer before and ended up with a modernistic gibberish of a piece you don’t ever want to hear again

  • You are burned out on the drama of collaborating with creative people because they have no business sense and do not deliver on agreed upon deadlines

  • You think composers are ego-driven divas who will ignore your input and create something you will always regret having your name attached to

    Yet, deeply inside you know that

  • You cannot stand listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and you long for something fresh and revolutionary

  • You feel the need to create your own legacy and to make a meaningful splash in the world of the arts

  • You are tired of traditional clichĂ© approaches but you feel that the schizophrenic avant-garde culture alienates the audience and the performers
