Reflections on Art and Life
My piece for vibraphone and string quartet is nearly completed. Today I have been revising dynamic markings and adding articulations. I wrote this piece for Jason DeCristofaro who plays both classical music and jazz and it was clear from our first conversation that the composition would explore both worlds. The instrumentation and formal design are very classical, but the quartal harmonies and many syncopated melodic riffs echo jazz. I think in certain points I even detect samba! This piece was so much fun to work on and I am looking forward to its premiere in Asheville on July 21.
